Safeguarding and Under-18
Keeping young pupils safe.
This is Steero’s interim safeguarding policy, operated by WHD Ltd, trading as Steero. Safeguarding is a serious area; this sets the standard we hold instructors to and is honest about what the instructor is responsible for today. We review and update this policy as the platform grows.
1. Who this covers
Any pupil under the age of 18 who takes lessons with an instructor found through Steero.
2. Guardian consent
A pupil under 18 may only take lessons with the informed consent of a parent or legal guardian. The instructor is responsible for obtaining and recording that consent before lessons begin, including who the guardian is and how to reach them. An instructor must not proceed with an under-18 pupil without guardian consent.
3. Our instructors
Every instructor on Steero holds a current DVSA instructor registration (an ADI green badge or a PDI trainee licence), which itself requires an enhanced DBS check. We verify the badge against the DVSA register at sign-up and periodically. Instructors must follow the DVSA ADI code of conduct and good safeguarding practice with young pupils, keep communication appropriate, and involve the guardian where reasonable.
4. What Steero does
- Verifies each instructor’s DVSA registration, and therefore that they hold an enhanced DBS, before their page goes live.
- Minimises the personal data held about young pupils and applies the same security and retention rules as for adults.
- Provides a route to raise a safeguarding concern.
- Is building, before opening booking to the general public, in-app guardian consent, age handling, and masked instructor and pupil contact details.
5. Reporting a concern
If you have a safeguarding concern about an instructor or a pupil, contact support@steero.co.uk immediately. Where a child is at immediate risk, contact the police (999) or the NSPCC. We act on credible concerns, including suspending an instructor pending review.
